Skybridge Engagement Case Study

Skybridge Group is a specialised service provider who installs, maintains and manages client assets in the fields of advanced technology infrastructure, medical & security services and solar services. Skybridge is well recognised in the industry for its innovative go to market approach with cutting edge technologies. With its bespoke online portal, they provide a transparent first-class experience of provisioning, managing and reporting its activities to its stakeholders and sub-contractors. Whilst at the same time complying with ISO standards for quality and safety within their working environments.

jeylabs, as digital business transformation consultants, have been engaged with Skybridge since February 2016 to analyse current systems and processes. Based on this analysis to then design an advanced architecture for the existing platform to uplift its delivery and performance making it future ready. To achieve this jeylabs have provided consultancy services in:

  • Business Analysis

  • Mobile Application Development

  • Data Visualisation

  • Agile Software Development and Test automation using a Hybrid team

  • Enterprise Architecture Review and Design

 

The Team

The core development team consisted of an on-shore technical consultant working in parallel with the in-house development team. Supporting this structure were a number of off-shore .NET resources, one of which was delegated as the team lead to manage communications between the two teams. In parallel and as required, business analysts, mobile development experts and data visualisation analysts were also involved in proposing and executing changes to enhance the current platform. 

Challenges & Problems

Skybridge have many large projects with varying requirements. These requirements needed be implemented in a key system being used to manage over 20,000 Ticket of Works (ToWs) for any given month. The internal technical team had to deal with rapid development requests as well as support requests

Skybridge and jeylabs worked together to implement a hybrid delivery team to meet with their current development and testing demand. Introducing a hybrid delivery team allowed Skybridge to grow and shrink the development team based on demand. This was not only a helping hand with reducing a large backlog of work but this was achieved in a cost-effective manner.

How jeylabs and Skybridge worked together

  • Seamless delivery using a hybrid delivery team, JIRA project structure, processes and workflows were redesigned to given more visibility to project management.

  • As per standard agile methodology daily stand up and daily status update reports from the offshore team made the accountability and communication of delivery outcomes more effective.

  • Source code was migrated from a local SVN repository to Visual Studio Team Services (VSTS), to make source code and version control available from outside internal networks, aiming to reduce dependency on VPN.

  • Projects and Visual Studio solutions were re-organised to support effective branching strategies to help fast track feature releases independent from current release and testing cycles.

  • Continuous Integration (CI) and Automate Release Management was implemented using VSTS build definitions to avoid code breaks and made deployment an effortless task.

  • Unleashed the power of Skybridge hidden data by using Microsoft Power BI and Microsoft Excel Services to enable reporting of core applications’ digital data allowing the business to get great insight into business trends, while helping the stakeholders to make more effective planning and business decisions.

  • Skybridge transitioned from using network file shares for document management to version controlled document management through Microsoft SharePoint. Through this form of collaboration Skybridge were able to deliver more effective project outcomes with digitally controlled documentation and collaboration. 

  • jeylabs delivery best practices of using shadow resources to ensure continuous delivery provided the client with confidence that development would be on-going and transition to new team members would be seamless.

jeylabs successfully provided technical delivery and architectural services to Skybridge by uplifting the existing application platform with the use of hybrid delivery using on-shore and off-shore technical resources and enhanced the overall software development lifecycle to provide the business with more value as an integrated IT team.

Skybridge were successfully able to reduce several months of backlog in just a few weeks and then address some of the architectural concerns to help the platform to scale.
